Reforestation research project

Vanuatu

WCG reforestation team’s technical expertise is in the design, establishment and management of productive biodiverse forest ecosystems.  WCG’s forest design and management  is tailored to each site to provide enhanced yields, reduced risks for investors and also to deliver better environmental outcomes in terms of species supported and forest water management.

Establishment

Simply planting monocultures or a selection of native plants will not necessarily result in a healthy and productive ecosystem. WCG implement a long-term succession based restorative process to reinstate the natural forest functions upon each site.

Management

Yield improves dramatically with good management. For example, the process of thinning provides numerous forest benefits. It enables the forest canopy to develop more rapidly, essential for providing habitat.  Placing the thinned biomass upon the forest floor provides feed for fungi which accelerates nutrient cycling processes, builds soil carbon and enhances forest water utilisation.

Pests and Disease

The best defence against pests and disease is a healthy forest ecosystem. Forests are most vulnerable if they are single species or before they have reached maturity hence the requirement for ongoing monitoring and management of pests and disease.

Fire

WCG implement fire management standards in accordance with commercial forestry best practice. This includes monitoring, establishing fire breaks, controlled burning and cooperating with local fire authorities.

Research

Ongoing research into biodiverse forest systems is a key strength of WCG’s approach. Through this research we ensure our systems continually improve. We provide research services to clients.

Community

WCG works to deliver returns to local stakeholders. We utilise suitably qualified local contractors and provide a long-term income stream to landowners.
