The Northern Rivers, North Eastern NSW was once home to the largest area of continuous sub-tropical forest outside the Amazon. Known locally as The Big Scrub, less than 1% of the original forest now remains.
WCG is partnering with a Jiggi landholder to establish 30 hectares of Big Scrub sub-tropical rainforest which will halt erosion upon sensitive steep slopes, and protect the riparian zone.
The project will provide the landholder with a share of the carbon revenue long into the future. The local community will further benefit since a suitably qualified neighbour was identified to provide contracting services to the project and three local environmental science students are gaining hands-on ecological restoration experience and income providing planting services.
